Humans are innately superior than other species of this world only because they have ability to think and act intelligently. They have the power to use the resources around them to create purposeful and meaningful things. Now, the humans have decided to outsource this power to an abstract concept known as artificial intelligence.Artificial intelligence has become the buzz word in today’s world which brings both surprise and anxiety at the same time.On one hand , the world is staring at a productivity boost due to automation of services sector and on the other side, joblessness anxieties are catching up as these AI/ML models try to replace white collar jobs by automating their work.Undoubtedly,Artificial Intelligence has the ability to shrink the services sector and give boost to manufacturing sector as it requires huge data centres to power its computational abilities. Thus, it will be no surprise to see changing economic structure of the world. However, the big question is how much space artificial intelligence has in world dominated by humans.

Firstly, humans have always liked automation but never at the cost of the automation dominating their way of life. The classic example of this is chess.Till the time, chess had computers which were beatable by humans, there was a lot of interest in organising humans vs the computer game. However, the last such game was only in 2005/2006 and after this, the organisers abandoned this model. The reason for doing so was that the computers became unbeatable and humans lost interest in fighting against them. The chess returned back to human vs human games. The point to be drawn here is automation is liked by humans till the point it helps them improve but beyond that humans don’t want to see artificial structures trying to dominate their mental faculties. The same is true for cricket where still umpires are used to make it more lively when enough technologies are available to replace them.

Secondly, Artificial intelligence can excel at work which is largely defined in nature. These works include preparing codes, presentation, reports and executing complex computational demands. But it does not have power to understand what humans want to say but don’t say.Humans have powerful langauage of sadness, excitment and gestures.Infact, very few humans can communicate all their emotions through words. The need to understand ‘emotions of humans’ is largely used in decision-making that affects human life. The best example of this is doctor’s advice to the patients.A doctor’s advice to its patient does not solely depends on the patient’s medical condition but also his mental preparedness to undergo treatment.Sometimes, it also takes care of financial conditions of the patient. Also, at the back of doctor’s mind is the fact that every patient is not likely to respond similarly to the same treatment. Thus, Artificial intelligence can automate the diagnosis but is materially short when it comes to treatment of humans.

Thirdly, Artificial Intelligence has yet not matched the roundedness of human mind.It does not have a penalty for guess work and that is why we see something known as ‘AI Hallucination’.When the LLMs like chatgpt , gemini etc do not have complete information , they don’t acknowledge their limitation and try to guesss the answer based on the limited information they have.In the world of precision, such guesswork is harmful and can lead to catastrophic consequences. Thus, while AI may do knowledge gathering and processing very quickly, it will still require human proof reading before deployment. Thus, a code will still need a human reviewer before its deployment.Similarly, a report will have to be corrected by the presenter before releasing it to clients. Thus, the humans will still play a pivotal role in the creation of ultimate product.

Fourthly, current AI models are largely based around automation of human communications. They have power to interpret large amount of human communications and generate a largely human output. Thus, they are trained in the same way humans are trained to read and write .But what they are not trained is to respond to situation which is a complete break from the past. The diplomats have to think very differently when there is a leadership change in the other country or the negotiations are driven by emotions rather than logic.A public speaker cannot afford to give all the answers by logic and many a times, it is the emotional appeal that works. Thus, AI can provide content to humans but its character will continue to be defined by the humans.

Lastly , many human objectives are achieved through confidentiality in the process.Businesses don’t want their strategy to go out , Individuals don’t like to share what is working for them and governments keep a whole lot of information still on paper so that no one can know about them.Ofcourse, such information is critical to survival of such organisation.Just ask chatgpt about how it has been created and it will give you a plain vanilla answer that will not reveal anything.Even the makers of Large Language models are hiding their training data and methodology from users. So , the point is that the information that is necessary for survival of organisations will never get through large language models. Thus, humans are likely to use such models to serve their purpose rather than completely abdicating their control over them. The great imagination given by developers of such model that work will become optional is more a marketing of product that they have made than the real understanding of how human world operates.Humans, should adopt AI but should not get overwhelmed by the hype being developed around it.
